The Poor Fisherman (Bint Al Shabik) is a folkloric tale from the oral tradition of the Arab world, bearing some resemblance to Cinderella as told by Charles Perrault in the West. It tells the story of a poor fisherman’s daughter who, despite the cruelty of her stepmother, gains the trust of a prince and eventually marries him.
This frieze is part of an effort to document the intangible cultural heritage of Fujairah, in the United Arab Emirates. It brings to life a past that is slowly disappearing in the face of rapid modernization.
